A new era began when India became an Independent democratic republic on 26th January 1950. It is one of the most important days in the history of India as it was on this very day the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly sovereign state. On this day India became a totally republican unit.
The country finally realized the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and several freedom fighters, who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the country. Hence, the 26th January was declared a national holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India ever since.
Before India became republic no President was there. The 26th January 1950 was a historic day on which Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who presided over the Indian Constituent Assembly from 1946 to 1949, was elected the first President of republic India. Hence it is a day of a great festivity. Our national feelings are linked with it.
This day is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm. However special celebration is held at Vijay Chowk, which is in front of the President's house. People from every nook and corner of the country come here to witness the celebration and share the joy with one another.
First of all Prime Minister Salutes the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country at Amar Jawan Jyoti after that the President comes to the saluting base escorted by his bodyguards mounted on horses. He is welcomed by the Prime Minister, Defence Minister and Chiefs of the three wings of the armed forces-land, navy and air.
The President after hoisting the flag delivers speech on this auspicious occasion highlighting the bravery of our freedom fighters. Then he presents gallantry awards to the military and police personnel for their exceptional courage in the field. He also awards the medals of bravery to the civilians who have distinguished themselves by their acts of valour in different situations.
A grand parade is held in the capital from the Raj ghat along the Vijay Path to mark the importance of the day. The creme of N.C.C. cadets, selected from all over the country, participate in this event.
The school children from various schools of the capital also participate in the parade. Tableaux from different states and Union Territories depict the cultural tradition and progress of their regions.
In state capitals the national flag is unfurled by the Governors. This day is also celebrated in cities, towns, villages, schools and colleges. Indian embassies and high commissions in foreign countries too celebrate this important day with great patriotic feeling.
Thus, this historic day is commemorated in a gala way.

January 26th is celebrated by Indians as Republic Day. We celebrate it every year. It was on this day in 1950, that India became a Sovereign Democratic Republic and gave to itself a constitution of its own.
The Republic Day is celebrated all over the country as well as all over the world by Indians with great pomp and show In Delhi it is celebrated amidst great enthusiasm and joy. A special parade is held on the day. Early in the morning people begin to assemble at Rajpath and other places to see the grand parade. The President of India takes the salute.
A procession starts from Vijay Chowk. All the three wings of the armed forces take part in the parade. There is a display of tanks, big guns and other weapons of war; in fact the strength of the armed forces. Military bands play tunes. N.C.C. cadets and the police also participate in the parade.
They are followed by tableaux from the different states. They depict the picture of the life and customs of the people of the respective states and the progress they have made after independence. Unity in diversity is amply displayed.
Folk dancers assemble in the Capital from states. The dancers sing and play on various instruments. Boys and girls of local colleges and schools march in procession and sing national song.
There is a colourful fly-past by different types of aeroplanes. Rose petals are showered from air and a trail of saffron, white and green, the colours of the National Flag, is left behind. Balloons of tri-colour also float in the air.
At night all the government buildings are illuminated and the people move out to watch the beautiful sight.
